DBT and getting help...? |

I was diagnosed at BPD around June..I've been reading up on here about DBT, and I've also read about it in the past, from what I'm reading it does
work well when you apply it....and I think it would really benefit me. On the other hand the person I went to did not mentioned it, and I don't know how
to go about getting involved in DBT therapy, or to find a doctor around me that speciallizes in BPD, and will help me get in it so I can learn the skills I
need...Could someone help me here and tell me how to go about it? also How often do you go to DBT? I read its for a year, but its it every week etc? Any help
would be appreciated, thanks in advance.

i was also wondering the same thing
i've been in regular counseling for years but i really don't know what the difference is speaking of, i have a counseling appointment this wednesday and i plan on asking my counselor about DBT i'll let you know what she says |

DBT is about learning ways to actively combat and changed flawed thinking and responses. It can be done one to one but is often in a group session. The person
leading the group maintains contact with your therapist or treating team( or did with me). It is hard to explain but involves keeping diaries and workbooks and
charts and practice practice practice.It also teaches helpful skills in being aware of yourself and what is happening around you, relaxation and meditation,
ways to diffuse a potential situation, means of distracting yourself etc. Eventually you can get to a space where you recognise the triggers for your targeted
behaviours (things you want to change ie aggession, self injury etc) and take actions that are helpful.
Someone here said we need to use a four legged stool to sit with BPD, using DBT is a good strong leg and with things like medication and therapy ( oops I've forgotten the 4th leg!!!) help make a very steady stool. You can do online and self applied DBT workshops and workbooks, I would reccomend face to face if you are new to it. |

so i went to counseling today
and i talked to my couselor about the best therapy options for me and she thinks that CBT (cognitive behavior therapy) is the better way to go for me. plus, she is specialized in CBT and it seems to be just as good as DBT i have to buy a workbook and we moved my appointments closer together. i'm really excited about it! I have done Cognitive Behavioural Training. CBT focuses on your intellect. CBT is very useful and I use a lot of self talk and prep from it. DBT focuses on
both your intellect and your emotion. DBT is leading edge treatment for BPD though and I have found that very very useful in recognising body/emotion ques and
acting to prevent being triggered or to shut a triggered reaction down. I suggest you go with the CBT and when you've done that re raise the topic of DBT.
If your therapist is not DBT trained she can refer you to someone or a program that is.
