St. John's Wort and 5 HTP? |
Lead | |
|
I have been avoiding taking prescriptions and have been using natural, over-the-counter antidepressants-St. John's Wort and 5 HTP. So far, they work well
b/c they help me stay calm which in turn helps my depression. Some days they are not strong enough and I drink sedative herbal tea to increase the sedative
effects of the supplements. It has worked well for me but I am also high functioning and using other self help tools.
Has anyone else tried these? If so what are your comments on them? Stephanie Price

Hmm, yes, I believe I had read a bit about St. John's Wort a while ago....have never tried anything of the sort though....The only things I ever tried were
2 herbal pills for moods I had gotten from a nutritionist....I forget what exactly they were though...that was a long time ago and when I had gone to a new
psychiatrist just to get something small for anxiety, he had put me on a few different meds because the herbals were 'not near enough to help me' he
had said....I never even had much of a chance to let them work....

I use Krill Oil capsules(omegas 3&6), CoQ10, Magnesium Oxide and Tuarate, Spirulina and Black Cohosh plus a multi vitamin for over 50's. I am in the
process of reducing my anti psychotic from 300mg to 150mg(currently 200mg) and use 300mg Effexor. There is research that points to Omega deficiency and
Magnesium imbalance and disordered mood and poor impulse control. I say take the best from what is available. I use DBT, see a pychologist, a psychiatrist and
a GP with naturopathic qualifications. Listen to what works for others and do your own research. I have been lucky this year and have had over six months
almost symptom free. I think that there is much more to be learned.

I would just like to add that if you are concurrently taking prescription medications, be sure to discuss any herbal preparations you are considering with your
prescribing physician. Some of the herbals actually can compete with the prescription drugs for receptor sites at the cellular level. This means that they
might either enhance or reduce the effectiveness of the prescription drug. Some combinations are dangerous. Please be careful and fully disclose any and all
compounds you are taking into your body. Just because a compound is herbal or holistic doesn't mean that it completely safe to take under all
circumstances.

Thank you. One thing I forgot to mention is that prescription drugs are regulated by the Food and Drug Administration and must meet specific criteria for
purity, safety, AND efficacy. Herbal and holistic compounds do not fall under the FDA's authority. They are regulated by the USDA, which does not perform
the extensive testing mandated by the FDA. Although the herbals are generally safe, there is NO guarantee of effectiveness. A classic example of this is the
category of diet pills. How many of us have taken the bait expecting the pounds to just pour off as "promised"? I have a shelf full of that
worthless crap. When it comes to mood regulation, can we really have faith that these herbals will be any more effective than the dietary supplements? I
don't know about you folks, but I have hypertension and would not assume the risk of depending on an herbal preparation to help with my blood pressure
regulation. Neither would I take an amino acid supplement such as 5- hydroxytryptophan and expect my mood swings to be accurately controlled.

That's why a General Practitioner with a second string like Naturopathy or Acupunture etc can be so valuable. Having a doctor who liases with my
specialists and is qualified to practice and prescibe medication is so useful. When I was diagnosed with cancer 13 years ago I certainly used the best of both
worlds chemotherapy, oncologist, nutrition, supplements, visualisation, organics, juicing etc etc. And any reduction or addition I make to my regime is done in
conjuction with all who treat me.
