asked a few questions to my licensed therapist |

she has treated 15 BPD/BPD trait people, and 14 being a success. she stated that the cause of BPD can be several, which is good. she stated that she will be
using structured CBT for my BPD. is CBT used often for BPD and is it successful?? i asked why she doesn't do DBT, and she says she would need more
training for it. so far it has been my 2nd session seeing her.

Hmm, what is CBT?
DBT of course is supposed to be the most successful for BPD....from the looks of things though she seems to be very successful with BPD patients....... Well either way, stick to seeing your therapist, and maybe even review/practice DBT on your own. There are plenty of books out on the lessons and everything there is to know/do. It really requires lots and lots of practice and dedication though (I've been reviewing/practicing it myself) - and either way, certainly continue the therapy you have at the moment!.....see where it takes you. Maybe she really can help. |

I'm not trying to be negative here....But I will be cautious......She told you 14 of 15???? Who measured her success? And by what measure? The first woman
I went to told me "No problem" too.....It soon became clear she was not up to the task at all......I'm skeptical of those numbers......I'm
not saying dump her.....I'm saying be careful and make your own decisions after you have been with her for a while.....See how comfortable you are with
her, and how much progress you are making......If it doesn't feel right, find someone else........

Here are a couple definitions I found on google for what CBT is.
CBT is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy - change how you feel by changing your thinking. A type of psychotherapy (or "talk therapy") that is based on the theory that psychological symptoms are related to the interaction of thoughts, behaviors, and emotions. In cognitive behavioral therapy, the therapist and patient will work on identifying and directly changing thoughts and behaviors that may be maintaining symptoms. CBT is a combination or a "pulling together" of any and all methods, strategies, and techniques that work to help people successfully overcome their particular emotional problems. The cognitive part of the therapy refers to thinking or learning and is the part of therapy that can be "taught" to the person. The person then needs to take what has been taught, practice it at home, and through means of repetition, get that new "learning" down into the brain over and over again.

DBT is actually based on CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy)... Marsha Lineham took CBT and added a lot to it to make it a treatment for BPD. CBT is primarily
used for depression.
I did CBT a few years ago and am now doing DBT and although certain fundamentals are the same they were designed to treat very different things... CBT works by changing your cognitive behaviour - the way you think. DBT does the same however it also works to change your behaviour - this is because DBT teaches a set of skills which aren't included in CBT. Probably the biggest difference is that DBT teaches mindfulness, a skill which allows us to calm out mind and emotional state... and DBT is based on dialectics.... dialectics is a world view that two things can be true at the same time... for example 'I am doing my best but I can try harder'. It allows us to learn to rationalise. I hate to break this to you but those two things are the the most important concepts/skills in treating our BPD. Now if you suffer from depression you may find CBT helps - but it won't address the highly reactive emotional symptoms of BPD (which I think are the main issue as they lead to impulsivity, etc) I should also mention that the structure of DBT is very unique and precise, this is important in treating BPD. DBT is done over a one year period and includes individual therapy and a group class every week. It was designed this way as this proved optimal for BPD patients. Hope that helps, Nas |

OH yes, isn't CBT also used for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder patients?? I see what you're saying Nas, about the depression thing..but I'm just
asking because I'm pretty sure I had a professional mention CBT to me years ago strictly because of my OCD. And I do believe that's what the therapists
use in that Obsessed show on A&E, for the Obsessive Compulsives. Well I guess as Bear had said too, CBT challenges your thought patterns and
behaviors....so I'm sure that is what's used. But like Nas said, Mindfulness is the biggest part of DBT and the key factor in helping Borderline
Personality! As well as the dialectics of it all, teaching us to rationalize (I learned all of this thanks to Nas herself, hehe).....but in all seriousness,
like I said before jjy, see where this therapist takes you......see if you're seeing improvement in yourself in a little while...hey, maybe she can
help....but maybe she can't and you'll need to find someone new.

I have been treated with CBT (or some version, forerunners) since I was 18..........I can't say it did not help at all.....It allowed me to have my logical
side.....To be able to analyze situations much like a normal person, but it never internalized those beliefs that came from this.
For me it only went so far......I think its a good starting point but likely not the final answer......It is now very frustrating to go to a therapist and have them hand me a sheet of paper with the exact same things I was handed in 1975......I suspect I need to get involved with DBT General Richard Garnett to General Lo Armistead just before they died leading their troops heroicly accross the open fields at Gettysburg in Pickett's

My insurance would not allow me enough sessions for me to consider DBT, however my Dr used CBT with some of the added characteristics of DBT. Your therapist
may not be certified in DBT, but may still be using the same style. As everyone has said so far, continue with therapy as long as you see improvement and are
comfortable.

I've used CBT and DBT. They are both useful. Spend some time with this therapist and see how things go. If you are using CBT then getting into some
relaxation/meditation and using it daily could add an extra dimension to what you are doing. Good luck and good on you for seeking treatment.

there is also this thing which is - every emotion has an action, and by changing the action you can slowly learn to change the emotion if it is unjustified.
For example - your partner doesnt call when they say there going to, and when they do your really mad about it even though they had a valid reason for not
calling. This emotion is unjustified, and your feeling angry. The action of anger is to lash out. So by changing the action of lashing out, to doing the
opposite, eg. moving away from the caause of your anger for a while, to let yourself cool down, and see things logically, then once your action has begun to
change, your emoion should change with it. I cant remember what is called, but the woman who came up with it, has dealt with many many many borderline
persoanlity sufferors, and is very successful in teh field and highly wel known. Hope that gives you food for thought, Its no easy though, and only works for
motions that are unjustified. xxxx
