I recently bought a dbt workbook. It seems like it could be helpful but was wondering if anyone else has tried them and if it actually did help?

Yes, I think it will be helpful. Although I went to the group therapy, I think the book can be helpful without it. For example, it will list myths about emotions and I believed many of them. Also, I read the cheerleading statements often. Good luck.

I just recently bought the book myself. It has some good ideas in the book. It isn't difficult to understand.
The only thing I will probably be bypassing is the constant changing of relaxation techniques. I can't possibly remember all of the ones the book states to try. It is certainly worth a shot especially when limited on time for therapy. |

I bought two workbooks .. the one that I'm currently working on is called "Don't let emotions run your life" ..
I rather like it actually, it's my first experience with DBT .. So far I've found myself in angry situations saying .. "I notice that I'm feeling agitated / angry" .. just being able to identify the emotions and learning to let them come and go naturally .. has helped a lot .. The only thing I've recently struggled with .. is I've been extremely busy / happy / motivated.. and I let the emotion come but before I could let it go .. fear distracted me .. I thought "oh crap I'm headed into a manic state" .. so .. it's just a wonderful thing .. I still can't control my emotions .. but I've become more "mindful" of them. Good luck! |

Though we don't use that book in my DBT group, we do use it in day treatment, and have found it helpful. Also, if you are interested, the author has a
myspace page and he does offer therapy over the internet (though it is rather pricey, and I'm not sure if it would be a long term thing) but he is one of
my myspace "friends" so I do get updates from him.

I use Matthew McKay, Ph.D's workbooks. I go to my local Barnes & Noble bookstore, sit down with a bunch of workbooks and pick out the ones that have
writing styles that I can relate to. The ones I am working on now are The Dialectical Behavior Therapy Skills Workbook and The Anger Control Workbook. This
author uses simple, everyday language like real people use in their personal relationships. I didn't care for Marsha Linhan's workbook that seemed to
me more like a research project for her professor. I write out my weekly DBT skill successes and failures in the workbook exercises and then review them in my
weekly individual therapy sessions. It works great for me. Hope something here is helpful for you. Good luck!

I have McKay's Dialectical Behavioral Therapy workbook as well. It was recommended on Amazon so I decided to buy it. So far I am impressed. It has great
skill building exercises that make you think. I have heard poor reviews on Linhan's book as well. I respect her work but in terms of the workbook it was
not reccomended. I just started DBT with my therapist and that is the workbook she wants to use so I guess I will buy it. But I will keep working on
McKay's book as well.

Just got the Thought and Feelings workbook by McKay. It's good and I've decided to only work on it for now since my head trips on false perceptions
and then I embarass myself reacting to the false perceptions with feaqr and anger.

Im using Marsha Linehams workbook and I have to say without the help of my therapist I would be lost. She says to "let feelings go", just like that,
thats it. She doesnt give you any advice on HOW to do that. frustrating! Of course we know we should let feelings go but how do you do that??!! It seems a bit
crazy to me!
When Ive finished using this workbook in conjunction with my therapist I will invest in the books you guys have mentioned, thank you. Maybe there will be some pracitcal advice in there! gypsy

books are great but remember there are also resources on the internet that can provide you with "worksheet" type stuff. The site www.dbtselfhelp.com
was a great help to me!

I recently bought McKay's book. I'm really liking it a lot. I've just started therapy and for now it is one on one with the therapist. In a few
weeks I will begin a DBT group meeting as well. Not sure what book she will use but I suspect it is Linhan's. My therapist is real open to the books I have
and asks for me to bring them in. I also have the Angry Heart - Overcoming Borderline and Addictive Disorders by Josephy Santoro, and Ronald Cohen, PH.D's.
This is a good book too using "recovery exercises" which are to be journaled to help bring clarity to your past. He has a website as well
www.slshealth.com.
